Ovaj rad predstavlja psihološku raspravu o dramatičnim epizodama u istoriji čovečanstva kao što su to ratovi, katastrofe i masovne nesreće koje izlaze iz okvira čovekovog uobičajenog iskustva. Ratovi pokazuju šta se može desiti ljudskom razumu kad ga obuzmu i nadvladaju hostilnost, bes, panika i strah, kada najniži i najprimitivniji slojevi mentalnog funkcionisanja izbiju na površinu.
