Abstract

In the paper, some findings from the literature on the characteristics and specificities of the female prison population, as well as on the sources of support which are recognised as the most important by female offenders, are presented. Interpersonal relations between inmates as a source of support are insufficiently investigated in our prison community, having in mind its importance for better adaptation to prison life and its quality. From the title of the paper, it is easy to conclude that the main idea of the present research was to investigate different sources of support as seen by women offenders based on their own experience. The data were collected using a questionnaire from a convenience sample of women offenders from CI Požarevac. We were interested in finding out what they see as the most important sources of support outside of prison and within it, and what kind of relationships they establish with other inmates. The data were compared with the results from other studies that investigated these themes in female prisons, and we see the results of this explorative study as grounds for making more profound research on these topics.
