Indirect Victimization of Children as a Risk Factor for Violent Criminal Behavior in Adulthood
Keywords:
violence, childhood, indirect victimization, delinquency, adulthoodAbstract
Indirect violent victimisation of children, almost as much as direct victimisation, represents a risk factor for the violent behaviour of victimised children in adulthood. The relationship between the experience of violent victimisation and subsequent manifestation of violence was identified and confirmed by numerous international studies. However, subsequent empirical confirmation of criminological consequences of indirect violent victimization childhood is almost an exception in our society.
The paper aims to show a part of the survey findings on the impact of early violent victimisation on violent crime of adults, specifically related to the effects of the experience of indirect violent victimisation. After a brief review of theoretical approaches to the interpretation of the relationship between these two similar, yet so different forms of violent criminal behaviour, the results of an empirical survey that confirm the basic assumptions of the thesis of the cycle and intergenerational transmission of violence are given.
